Organizational Capabilities in a Cosmospolitan World

The world around us is changing... Let's being with two assumptions.

The first is that change is a normal part of business life. Change is not something that has to be done when things are going to badly.

Our second assumption is that an organisation's ability to manage change will have a significant effect on its performance and prosperity.

Both of these assumptions are supported with evidence. However, successful change management is immensely challenging.

Why is managing organisational change so difficult? Standards like ISO 9000 and Six Sigma have been used along with concepts such as bench-marking, best practice and high -performance organisations.

Knowledge has been managed and organisations have 'learned'.

If organisation 'learned', then why did the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster occurred on February 1, 2003, when Columbia disintegrated over Texas and Louisiana as it reentered Earth's atmosphere, killing all seven crew members.

Organizations and Organizing in a "flat" world

The flattening of the world is about the creation of a global platform for multiple forms of sharing work, knowledge and entertainment.

  • My parents used to say "clean your plates because there are children in China who are starving. Now we should say "do your homework" because children in China are starving for your jobs.

  •  Any activity where you can decompose the value chain and move the work will get moved around.
  • Natural resources and geographic location no longer determine a nation's potential. A nation's power no longer determines an individual's potential.
(Friedman T (2005) The World is flat. NYC: Picador)

Are governments now being managed as corporations??
Is the government becoming more like an inverted totalitarianism?

Emerging realities in a "flat" world are happening in fast developing regions..

which one can you identify?

What company do you admire and why?

Google, Dell, Freddie Mac ESPN2, Apple, Microsoft, SigullerGuff NBC, Fidelity Investments Lilly, Pfizer, Science Exchange, Cisco, Akamai, JPMorgan, Activision, P&G, BBVA..

 Organizational Culture

Do we know how we want to be know by our best customers?
Have we created an organizational culture or shared mindset to ensure that they receive this desired experience whenever we touch them?
Do we have a culture of identity that reflects what we stand for and how we work?
Is it shared by both customers and employees?

 Leadership

Do we have high quality leaders in our organization? Do we have a leadership brand that directs managers on which results to deliver and how to deliver them?

 Change (and Speed) management

Do we have the capacity to do the important things fast?
This is smart speed. Can we move quickly to make important things happen fast?

  Accountability and Performance

Does high performance matter to the extent that we can ensure execution of strategy?

 Talent, Motivation and Commitment

Do our employees have the competencies and the commitment required to deliver the business strategy?

Social responsibility as an organizational capability

How can we align our firm's core business, people and performance with social/environmental issues?

Customer connectivity as an organizational capability

Do we form enduring relationships of trust with target customers?

Learning and Innovation

Are we good at generating new ideas with impact - and generalizing those ideas across boundaries? How well do we innovate in product, strategy, channel, service, and administration?

Strategic Unity

Do our employees share an intellectual, behavioral, and procedural agenda for our strategy?

Efficiency

Do we reduce costs by closely managing processes, people, and projects?

Collaboration, Teams and Networks

To what extent are we able to create efficiencies and synergies so that the total is more than just the sum of the parts? (1 + 1 is not = 2, but more than 2, 3 ..) How well do we collaborate to gain both efficiency and leverage?

The Cosmopolitan Society and its enemies

What is a Cosmopolitan sociology? Interconnectedness. Fluid that flows: Cosmopolitanization from within Space-time Identity Production Paradigm Class and Power Dilemmas of Cosmopolitanism Who are the Enemies of Cosmopolitan Societies?

Summary

Organizations can be seen more as "Capabilities" than structures. ... These impact the overall firm's performance.. The need to have a critical view...

 Organization Capability vs. Individual Capability

Individual :

  • Technical - Individual Technical Abilities (e.g. manufacturing, sales, finance, IT, marketing)
  • Social - Individual Social Abilities (e.g. sharing information, making decisions, managing conflicts, getting work done).
 Organization :

  • Technical - Organizational Technical Competencies (e.g. marketing, manufacturing, finance)

  • Social - Organizational Social Capabilities (e.g talent, leadership, collaboration, efficiency).

Healing in time and eternity

God heals both in time and eternity. As the God who acts in history, God declared and demonstrated Himself as 'Yahweh-Rapha', the "LORD who heals" (Ex 15:26). When healing will be manifested has always been a concern to those suffering from disease. The natural desire is for healing now - in time and space. That God heals as a wondrous sign in history is truth. That God must always heal now because we believe, obey, or confess the Word is myth. The myths will be handled later. Francis Schaeffer correctly observed that God revealed in Scripture is a personal-infinite God as revealed in Scripture is a personal is a personal-infinite God who acts both in eternity and in time and space.
